CASE STUDY / Whale Fortunes

Interactive fiction and local lore

Making an AI experience feel like visiting a place.

Whale Fortunes is a playful, entertainment-only fortune experience and living local mythology inspired by Salt Lake City’s 9th & 9th Whale.

01 / THE PROBLEM

Start with the real decision.

A generic fortune generator is easy to copy and easy to forget. The product needed a voice, a world, and a reason to exist beyond a single generated answer.

A fortune interface also needs clear boundaries. Playful ambiguity cannot become medical, legal, financial, or emergency guidance when someone asks a serious question.

02 / PRODUCT DIRECTION

A smaller, sharper workflow.

Anchor the digital experience to the real Out of the Blue whale sculpture, its neighborhood, changing murals, weather, walks, and community stories.

Treat the Whale as a carefully edited character. Fortunes should be funny, specific, emotionally varied, and recognizably from this world.

Separate entertainment from documented local information with a sourced Almanac, editorial standards, and a self-guided walking tour.

03 / WHAT SHIPPED

A working product, not a concept page.

  • Short in-character fortunes and optional playful rituals
  • A visible daily mood and return experience
  • Shareable, downloadable fortune cards and one-click text copying
  • A sourced Whale Almanac with local stories and events
  • A self-guided 9th & 9th walking tour
  • Safety routing that replaces high-stakes fortune language with direct real-world help

04 / PUBLIC EVIDENCE

What someone can verify today.

  1. The public experience clearly labels fortunes as entertainment and publishes separate safety and editorial standards.
  2. The Almanac distinguishes documented sculpture history and neighborhood information from the invented mythology.
  3. The product’s strongest material is place-specific: the real Whale, Salt Lake City, nearby stops, weather, murals, and community lore.

05 / DESIGN PRINCIPLES

01

Build a world, not a wrapper.

02

Let place and local specificity do the differentiating.

03

When a question becomes high stakes, clarity outranks character voice.
